Freedom to pursue ur education

August 23, 2012

This stage of my life, (i hope it lasts!) is bliss.

at a point where i am hungry to learn more

but yet, i do not need to learn what i do not want to know. This is so different from mugging thru the many years of formal education where u learn every single thing to pass the exams (though i gotta say that a lot of things came back useful unexpectedly).

learning, and finding out there;s something else to learn, and then learning how to learn that – it is almost branching out into an infinite loop – yet so exhilarating.

Yueh Hai Ching Temple

This temple is one of the most delightful thing i see as i walk to work everyday.

anachronistically situated amidst the backdrop of financial landscapers, i still see people going inside to offer incense every mng.

it’s almost zen like to see this in action while enjoying breakfast.

Preferred vs Common Stock

August 19, 2012

Preferred and common stocks are different in two key aspects.

First, preferred stockholders have a greater claim to a company’s assets and earnings. This is true during the good times when the company has excess cash and decides to distribute money in the form of dividends to its investors. In these instances when distributions are made, preferred stockholders must be paid before common stockholders. However, this claim is most important during times of insolvency when common stockholders are last in line for the company’s assets. This means that when the company must liquidate and pay all creditors and bondholders, common stockholders will not receive any money until after the preferred shareholders are paid out.

Second, the dividends of preferred stocks are different from and generally greater than those of common stock. When you buy a preferred stock, you will have an idea of when to expect a dividend because they are paid at regular intervals. This is not necessarily the case for common stock, as the company’s board of directors will decide whether or not to pay out a dividend. Because of this characteristic, preferred stock typically don’t fluctuate as often as a company’s common stock and can sometimes be classified as a fixed-income security. Adding to this fixed-income personality is the fact that the dividends are typically guaranteed, meaning that if the company does miss one, it will be required to pay it before any future dividends are paid on either stock.

To sum up: a good way to think of a preferred stock is as a security with characteristics somewhere in-between a bond and a common stock.

2 weeks to hols

August 18, 2012

it’s good to stop thinking abt the countdown and the recent work on my soho has really proceeded fast.

so far done the first cuts (during work!) – the work PC is just awesome – really good computing powers…

market has been very quiet – dead to an extent which is fantastic for me – i spend the whole day just writing codes and data crunching.

2 more weeks to my vacation, and one more week after that.

it’s really like a marathon – things start off rather heavy as u wonder how u will endure to the end. but once u are past the 35km mark, things look up and u look at the finish line with confidence and full anticipation.

20km LSD

August 18, 2012

it’s L, S indeed….

haven done 20km for a damn long time and i was determined to get one under the belt – regardless how long it takes or feel.

and it was awful.

basically just started to walk after 7km and i had to force myself just not to turn back. but it was certainly a good feeling to reach 10km…knowing that it is no way back now.

the return 10km was very much a walking affair.

the back was sore

the right heel was hurting

and it was 12:30 noon.

the garmin ran out of battery juice (i hate the fact the watch needs so much recharging)

suffering now…
